Summer Story Camp is part of the Southwest Harbor Public Library's efforts to keep literacy skills of community children from sinking during the summer break, while inspiring them with the fun of learning. Camp runs for five 1-week-long sessions; literacy and whole language activities under the guidance of a gifted literacy specialist who oversees the day-to-day curriculum with visiting art, music and science teachers throughout the week to round out the week's lesson plans. Art, science, music, movement, and storytelling techniques are used to inspire the words of our young authors use to read, to write, and to sing, thus each participant gains confidence in the tools and techniques to incorporate literacy into everyday activities.
This year, camp will be offered for five one-week sessions, Monday through Friday from 9:00 am – 12 Noon. Children between ages 5 and 10 are invited, with consideration given outside of the age group based on enthusiasm, special skills, certain group needs, etc.
