I hate to overuse the phrase but this is a “nice old fashioned story.” It is historical fiction based on the origin of Madam Alexander Dolls – During World War I a doll repair shop in NYC no longer able to get repair parts from Germany and begins making their own dolls – Jewish immigrants from Russia – the parents and their 3 daughters are deeply affected by the war – the middle 9 year old daughter, as main character, narrates the story in an honest and charming manner. I read in 1 sitting – love this kind of book – plenty of content – real issues but accessible & encouraging for young children.
