Usage Policy

The Digital Archive is the Southwest Harbor Public Library’s collection of historical and contemporary photographs, documents, maps, books, advertising, and other materials.  The Digital Archive website displays photographs as low-resolution files that are suitable for viewing with a web browser, but are unsuitable for making high quality prints. You may acquire high resolution images or order prints in accordance with the policies on this page.

Please read this page carefully before requesting an image.

Permissions and Copyright

While the Library is the custodian of the collections, it generally does not own the material nor the rights to the material in the collection and cannot give or deny permission to publish or otherwise distribute the materials in its collection. In most cases, the ownership of the copyright is unclear. In some cases, the rights are known and in the public domain, but the copyright has lapsed. To learn more about copyright terms and the Public Domain, visit the Copyright Information Center at Cornell University Library.

It is the patron’s obligation to determine and satisfy copyright or other use restrictions when publishing or otherwise distributing materials found in the Digital Archive.

Fees

The Library may charge a service fee to patrons who request high quality digital or print copies of materials from the Digital Archive. Payment of the fee does not grant to the patron any permissions or rights whatsoever. The Library charges the fee solely to defray reproduction costs and to help fund the growth and maintenance of the Digital Archive.

Print Usage and Prices

The Library fulfills print orders using a professional printing lab. After you request an image from the Library, an archivist will first determine if the image is available, and if so, upload a high resolution file to the lab and then send you a link where you can order and pay for the print.

Prints are for personal use only and cannot be reproduced or published.

  • Print prices are $20 for 8″ x 10″,  $30 for 11″ x 14″, and $60 for a 20″ x 30″ print.
  • Other sizes are available, but not all images have sufficient resolution to print at all sizes.
  • You’ll see the available sizes when you order the print.
  • You can pay for the print and shipping with either a credit card or PayPal.
  • The lab will ship the print directly to you.
Digital Image Usage and Prices

The Library makes digital images available for use in publications and on websites where a print copy is unsuitable. If you are seeking a print, please support the Digital Archive by ordering a print from us.

The Library may fulfill digital image orders directly or by using an online service. When requesting an image, please explain how you intend to use it. An archivist will evaluate the use and determine if the image is available before providing you with instructions for how to download and pay for the high resolution image.

  • Free* for non-profits, news media, and non-commercial scholarly endeavors.
  • $10 per image for personal, non-commercial use.
  • $25 per image for commercial use.
  • Discounts on a case by case basis when three or more images are requested.
  • Discounts or fee-waivers on a case by case basis for special circumstances.

*Please consider making an online donation to help us cover the cost of providing you with images.

Order Processing

The Digital Archive is operated primarily by volunteers and so it may take a while before someone becomes available to respond to and process your request. Please provide us with as much advance notice as possible since we usually cannot respond to last minute or deadline requests. Thank you for your patience and for supporting the Digital Archive by purchasing prints and digital images.
