As we mark the centenary of the start of the World War I, this fantastic true dog story will also teach a bit of history. Rags, a Parisien stray, was befriended by a lonely American GI and became the Division mascot, proving a worthy hero. As many dogs have done throughout time, Rags became a pet to the entire company, but was particularly devoted to the GI who rescued him. Rags had his own gas mask and he worked as a messenger, crawling under barbed wire and moving between the lines. As with any war story, there is room for explanation from adults, but the heroism displayed by this wonderful dog will be what most readers focus on.
