This is an absolutely gorgeous historical fiction about an adopted child trying to find her roots. The roots turn out to be on Penikese Island ; one of the Elizabeth Islands off Cape Cod that historically served to separate and treat people suffering from leprosy. The telling itself is startling, beautiful and compelling, coupled with a plot that alternates between painful introspection and suspenseful drama. The emotional depth of twelve year old “Crow” is inspiring. She faces prejudice, fear, hatred and greed with surprising grace in her relentless and compulsive search. Family is redefined to a higher power .
