This novel in verse demonstrates the power of poetry and the pain of adolescence. A strict catholic family from the Dominican Republic lives in Harlem with twin brother and sister. The parents are removed emotionally leaving the twins to navigate puberty with plenty of rules but no support or understanding. Xiomara is an amazing poet but doesn’t find the courage to share it until she joins the High School Poetry Club and participates in a Poetry Slam. Her poet’s voice is what ultimately saves her and begins some healing at home. A strong compellingly beautiful coming of age story for high school and up.
