We have other books for kids on the Japanese internment camps during WWII. I bought this one because it is told (through interviews) in the voice of a child. A real 10 year old child who loved baseball, hated reading and practicing the violin, lived with his successful parents, a brother and two sisters in San Jose California. They were of Japanese ancestry, spoke English well, and were proud to live in the USA. When Pearl Harbor was bombed, they were suddenly removed from their home in California and spent three years imprisoned in the Heart Mountain Internment Camp in Wyoming. The child, Norman Mineta, was of such good character, that in spite of the terrible injustice done to his family and thousands of others, he never lost faith in his country and grew up to become a congressman and worked for the rights of others . I couldn’t resist reading about this great kid; just a regular kid but with a spark of goodness and humor that drew people to him. I hope this book will be read along with the many other books that attempt to educate kids and help to eradicate the prejudice and racial injustice that still poisons our nation and ruins the lives of so many families. I hope kids like Norman live next door to you.
