CUB by Cynthia L. Copeland 2020 In a slightly fictionalized graphic novel memoir the author likens middle school to a jungle with predators (mean and popular kids) and prey (all the other kids). She (the main character) looses her best friend to the predators for a while but finds a mentor in her English teacher and shines as a cub reporter and photographer. A wonderful aspect is that readers witness first hand the empowerment she experiences from working to improve her writing skills. There is also plenty of sheer fun and enjoyment to the story. I hope kids will be encouraged to hang in there through the jungle that is middle school and to value themselves as individuals. The author’s notes at the end explain her own childhood and how much she chose to use in the book. I highly recommend! 6/28/20 SP
