I loved this book about a feisty young woman who succeeds against so many odds. She is an Afro Latinx senior in high school, living in racially challenging Philadelphia with her 3 yr old daughter and her Abuela. (there is no promiscuity here; one night, one mistake, one baby) She is a responsible and loving Mom to ‘baby girl’. She is also a talented cook and uses this means to express herself as an artist. As a senior, she is faced with planning her future and heroically manages to find her true self amidst a morass of complexities and well intended advice. Her personality, her love for her daughter, and her spicy cooking, all add up to a charming read; but it’s really about true grit and heart and the strength of this determined teenage Mom.
