Celebrate April Poetry Month
An ArtWaves & Southwest Harbor Public Library Collaboration
Call to Artists & Poets for a Meet, Exchange, Create & Reveal Program
Friday, April 1 at 5:30 p.m. & Tuesday, April 26 at 5:30 p.m. at Artwaves.
Local poets (all forms) and artists (all media) are invited to register for this creative exchange program, the first part will take place on Friday, April 1 at 5:30 p.m. at ArtWaves. At the program, artists and poets who register will be randomly matched and an exchange of art will take place: poets will exchange a poem to the artist and the artist will exchange a visual piece. Following the exchange program, and during the month of April, the poet will write a poem inspired by the art piece, and the artist will create a piece of visual art inspired by the poet. The poets & artists will then take part in the second part of the program – the reveal – which will include the artists and poets presenting their work on April 26, 5:30pm at Artwaves. Following the month’s creative exchange, the artwork and poetry generating will be on display at the Southwest harbor Public Library during the month of May. For more info about the program, call ArtWaves at 266-0010.
Flash poetry & art events will also take place as part of the series on April 5 at Artwaves and April 9 and April 12 at the Southwest Harbor Public Library.
Poetry Reading/Flash Visual Response
Tuesday, April 5 from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at ArtWaves
Join us at ArtWaves for this free evening event as part of our celebration of Poetry Month. Calling all artists who like to create visual art in response to words: join us on April 5 for this free program where we’ll host local poet Paul Weiss. Paul will read 3-4 of his poems and share copies with the artists in attendance. In partners or by themselves, artists will create “flash art” – in one hour – in response to one of Weiss’ poems. ArtWaves will have lots of materials at hand to use for the art piece. Between 6:30 and 7:00, each poem for which visual responses have been created will be read by Paul, and the flash art for that poem will be shared. If the artists are willing, images will be posted in conjunction with the poems as part of the Artists & Poets exhibit at the Southwest Harbor Public Library in May. For more info about the program, call ArtWaves at 266-0010.

In partners or by themselves, attendees will create “flash art” – within an hour -in response to one of the poems. There will be materials on hand to utilize during the art creation process. At the end of the event, each poem for which visual responses have been created will be read again by Paul and the flash art for that poem will be shared. If the artists are willing, images will be posted in conjunction with the poems as part of the Artists & Poets exhibit at the Southwest Harbor Public Library in May. Art Showing/Flash Poems for Everyone
Tuesday, April 12, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the Southwest Harbor Public Library
Vicky Smith and Thor Recherche, both artist members at ArtWaves, will each bring two pieces of art. Vicky paints scenes around MDI while Thor’s art is very abstract. The four pieces will be set up on easels around the room. Participants will choose one of the pieces to inspire a flash (on-the-spot) poem. Then, the poems associated with each piece of art will be shared and at the end, the artist will share his/her response and “story” behind the piece. This is a fun, free event, all welcome! If the poets are willing, poems will be posted in conjunction with the art as part of the Artists & Poets exhibit at the Southwest Harbor Public Library in May. For more info about the program, call the library at 244-7065.
